if it is anything like CROATIA, the master-piece of the greatest
artist - the nature. SLAVONIA, that beautiful part of CROATIA,
a picturesque granary that represents the abundance of pristine
nature, especially its Spacva forest basin rich in various flora
and fauna as well as in unique cultural and historical monuments.
Its pearls, towns and Slavonian Šokac villages, have settled along
the meanders of numerous rivers, one of them being in the very
heart of Slavonija and Šokadija. It is the town of Vinkovci, the
town of rich history, culture, architecture, folklore, tradition
and customs. Many people often wonder what is it that it is so
special about our town? It is a wide Slavonian soul, as wide and
as fertile as our Slavonian lowlands. Once people get to know it
they are always glad to come back to it. A famous writer from Vinkovci
once said: "A modern man who has no experience of lowlands should
visit this town while travelling Earth's wide spaces, the town
that has never died and hasn't been forgotten for already seven
thousand years. At the time when New York was a mere village, Vinkovci
was marked on all important maps of this part of Europe..." VINKOVCI
is the treasury of luxury, beauty and tradition. Each season will
offer you something for your soul in this beautiful town and its
surroundings. So come and visit our Slavonian town rich in touristic
offer. Marija Senčić, M.Econ. of tourism
Dear visitors!
Welcome
to Vinkovci, the town that lies on the banks of the river Bosut in
a luxuriously fertile and wooded Slavonian lowlands. Welcome to the
town rich in historical and cultural inheritance, continually inhabited
for 7,5 thousand years. It is the town that has overcome the earthquakes
of many a civilization, war and climatic disturbance. The town foundations
preserve the traces of prehistory, the town center itself is situated
within the walls of Roman "Colonia aurelia Cibalae" where two Roman
emperors were born: Valens and Valentinian. In the 3rd century the
town was the residence of an early Christian diocese and the two patron
saints of Vinkovci, St. Eusebius and St. Pollio originate from that
period. The medieval town's name St. Elias was supplanted by the folk
name Vinkovci, which proves that the ruins of the ancient "Cibalae" had
been settled by the Croats. By becoming the regimental seat of Military-Border,
Vinkovci became rapidly urbanised and it was at this period that the
town assumed its present-day appearance characterized by the succession
of baroque buildings belonging to the town core. Vinkovci takes pride
in many Croatian patriots, scholars, writers and artists born in it:
Croatian Ban (governor) Josip Šokčević, the composer of Croatian national
anthem Josip Runjanin, some of the leading figures of Croatian literature
- M.A. Relković, Ivan and Josip Kozarac, Vladimir Kovačić, Joza Ivakić
as well as some great Croatian artists - Vanja Radauš, Albert Kinert,
Slavko Kopač and many others. The town is famous for its numerous sport
clubs and national events such as Vinkovci autumn, Comics showroom,
Actor's festival. Vinkovci is also proud of its developed school system
(8 primary and 7 secondary schools, a 220-year-old Humanistic secondary
school, Faculty of Agriculture), culture (Town museum, Gallery, Town
library), science (HAZU-Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts), as
well as of its developed economy (food industry, wood and lumber industry,
building trade, textile industry). It is our wish that during your
stay in Vinkovci you experience some of our traditional hospitality
and that our town finds a place in your heart. TOWN MAYOR Mladen
Karlić, PhD.

THE
HISTORY OF VINKOVCI - Vinkovci has been settled from
the Neolithic until present day. In its prehistory various cultures
succeded one another through the Neolithic, Eneolithic, Bronze
Age, Halstatt culture and Laten period. During the Roman reign
Vinkovci becoms an important trade and artisan settlement - Colonia
Aurelia Cibalae. It becoms systematically destroyed by various
barbarous tribes until its final destruction in the second half
of the 6th century. Croatian traits are connected with Bjelobrdska
culture from the 9th century which was at the same time the substratum
culture for the settlement of St. Eliah on MERAJA, from which
the present-day Vinkovci have developed. By the end of the 11th
and the beginning of the 12th century, along the western outskirts
of Roman Cibalae and next to the rebuilt early Romanesque little
church dedicated to St. Eliah, a settlement with the same name
developed with which the history of present-day Vinkovci begins.
The first written mention of the medieval settlement dates from
1332 and it was made by a Pope's legat who was collecting taxes
in this region. In old maps as well as in various church and
other documents the settlement was recorded as: Szentelius, Szentilya,
Zentheleye, Zenthylye, St. Helye and other such names. The settlement
was named after the parish church dedicated to St. Eliah. That
church is one of the oldest early Romanesque churches in the
northern part of Croatia. In the Middle Ages, in the 15th and
16th century, concurrently with the name St. Eliah the name Vinko,
Wanko or Wanka appeared which later became Winkowcze, Winkoftzi
and Vinkovci.

The origin of the new name is to be found in the fact that the new
altar of a Gothic church was dedicated to St. Vincent, once a favourite
saint in this region, the patron of wine-growers, brick makers,
pharmacists, potters and fellers. In 1538 Vinkovci and its surroundings
was put under the power of Srijem sanjak. The area around the church
that had earlier served as a cemetary was converted by the Turks
into a promenade, resting-place or a place for taking it easy for
a while - meraja in Turkish. The name Meraja struck roots with
the inhabitants of Vinkovci and it is still used today.
Walking
the streets of Vinkovci - Vinkovci belongs to the
group of towns of the northern Croatian region characterized
by some very indicative architectural features. The architectural
structure of the town is the result of historical stages
the town has been going through as well as of various economic
and architectural influences and of economic and financial
strenght of its inhabitants. This is a town with ample architectural
inheritance. In terms of space, Vinkovci is a big town in
whose structure several bigger squares and main, long streets
are prominent. These were the basis of its urban development.
In the same way Vinkovci is characterized by several bigger
parks, green public areas, and a number of distinctly recognizable
planned contemporary boroughs or communities. Although they
were greatly destroyed and damaged during the wars, especially
Croatian War of Independence, most of the heritage buildings
have been rebuilt and the central part of Vinkovci seems
to be more beautiful and orderly than ever. The central square
with its distinct features of baroque town planning and its
peripheral parts closing it in, represents a space of a high
cultural and historic, urban, architectural, stylish and
aesthetic value of Vinkovci. Within the said urban complex
a town park unfolds itself to view. It came about in 1868
when the municipality head Adolf Albrecht let some trees
be planted where once a military "Paradierplatz" had been.
In the very central part of the park, almost since the beginning
of it, there is the monument of the Holy Trinity. During
the term of office of municipality head Nikola Janković the
park was enlarged and set up in French fashion. The parish
church was built in 1777 in baroque style and its contemporary
appearance was achieved in the beginning of the 20th century.
